In the E-Mail: @HPLHS’s DART – HERBERT WEST: REANIMATOR.

The HPL Historical Society had it on sale, so I finally picked up the DARK ADVENTURE RADIO THEATRE – HERBERT WEST: REANIMATOR CD. As usual, the MP3 got sent to me first. I have high hopes for this one: the very things that kind of make it, ah, not HPL’s best written story shouldn’t at all get in the way of the radio play. There’s a reason why directors keep making film versions of this story; it adapts well*.

Moe Lane

*Theoretically. Some of the film versions of this story are… uneven.

In the e-Mail: @HPLHS’s THE DREAMS IN THE WITCH HOUSE DART.

I’m running out of DARTs to buy! Which is kind of alarming. On the other hand, I’m holding out for HERBERT WEST – REANIMATOR. The story itself is a little clunky sometimes, but I have high hopes for the radio play adaptation, as those clunky bits will likely dissolve utterly when actually dramatized with sound and everything. Again, here’s hoping.

Listened to @HPLHS’s A SOLSTICE CAROL last night.

Because if you’re wrapping presents at midnight, why not do it while listening to a HPL Historical Society DART? Anyway, A SOLSTICE CAROL is excellent; I don’t know if it’s my absolute favorite Lovecraft radio play, but it’s definitely in the top three. The DART is a genuinely clever combination of Lovecraft and Dickens that manages to capture the mood of, say, ‘Pickman’s Model’ while at the same time remaining true to the mood of ‘A Christmas Carol.’ I found the climatic moment endearing and oddly sweet, despite the fact that it… ah, spoilers.

Worth checking out, in other words.

In the Mail: @HPLHS’s THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE Dark Adventure Radio Theater.

I actually got it Saturday, but I forgot to get the mail Saturday. So now I’m listening to THE COLOUR OUT OF SPACE now, headphones and all. As always, the DART’s a treat; the HPL Historical Society does good work with these.

But I still want more movies*.

Moe Lane

*Yeah, I know, Nick Cage’s making one on this very subject. But I want more HPLHS movies, too. I’m greedy that way.

Bad Medicine download now available from @HPLHS.

Bad Medicine is the collection of medical-themed Mythos and Poe stories: “Cool Air,” “The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar,” and “The Picture in the House.” Admittedly, the last one is perhaps a bit of a stretch when we’re talking medical. But certainly anatomy is involved.

I’m getting the CD itself, but check out the MP3 version. HPLH’s Dark Adventure Radio Theater productions are a favorite of mine. I mean, they must be: I’m not even trying to get a cut of the sale.

In the e-mail: @HPLHS’s Dagon: War of Worlds. (DART)

DART stands for “Dark Adventure Radio Theater,” in case you’ve missed somehow that I buy the HPL Historical Society’s radio dramas whenever I happen to have a combination of a bank account balance and the sweet, horrible cravings.  I picked up Dagon: War of Worlds (which has been a bit expanded from Lovecraft’s original story) when I could no longer keep myself from pre-ordering The Haunter of the Dark. I bought the physical CDs, of course — they come with props — but the HPLHS sends over the mp3s of the shows when you buy a physical copy, so Dagon’s unzipping as we speak.

The anticipation consumes me.  What terrors will be revealed?  What dizzying vistas shall I… um, hear? We’ll soon find out…

New DART pre-order from @HPLHS: The Haunter of the Dark.

This is gonna be one of the good ones. The Haunter of the Dark is a great story and the HPL Historical Society always does a good job with their Dark Adventure Radio Theatre entries. I look forward to it.

New DART (Thing on the Doorstep) coming out soon!

As in, maybe by the end of the week.

Already pre-ordered; The Thing on the Doorstep is one of HP Lovecraft’s more interesting works for me, because it’s one that takes place in an area that would have been within HPL’s own comfort zone.  It’s not out in the wilderness, or the depths of space, or even – horror of horrors! – NYC; this is a horror story that’s set right in the man’s backyard, and that gives it a little extra flavor.  Plus, this is one that should work well on radio.

@HPLHS’s ‘Thing on the Doorstep’ Dark Adventure Radio Theater going to the CD printer’s.

If that’s what that sort of thing is called, mind you. Anyway, I’m looking forward to the latest DART: I finally managed to finish both The Shadow Over Innsmouth and At The Mountains of Madness last weekend (listened to ’em while building furniture), so The Thing on the Doorstep will come just in time*. It’s a shame that Lovecraft never developed that story further: it might have had the legs to be a novella or even novel.

*Although there are any other number of CDs that I have yet to buy
