The “So, somebody sent us a Harley Quinn script by mistake” CRUELLA Trailer.

Oops, did I type that out?

Via @BrianFaughnan, who is correct: CRUELLA does seem off. It might just be the trailer — or it might be that it’s kind of weird to make movies about villains. I’m also struck by the problem that it’s much easier to make a character unattractive in an animated movie than live-action. I absolutely get that Emma Stone didn’t want to lose seventy-five pounds and wear a too-loose skin suit, but… actually, somebody’s already summed it up:

The THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER trailer.

Come, I will conceal nothing from you: I laughed. Falcon and the Winter Soldier have never gotten along in the movies, and they apparently are continuing to not get along in their show together. It will hopefully make for amusing television.

WandaVision is entertainingly messed up.

Finally sat down and watched both of the first episodes. I think that dropping the first two and then making people wait is smart: it establishes nicely that there’s something seriously weird about WandaVision. Mind you, I assumed that right from the start.

Also, an interesting note: I had it up on my computer with my earbuds in so as not to disturb everybody else. My wife watched a little, over my shoulder, and observed later that when you can’t hear anything the camera work is a lot more evocative of a horror show. Which I’m pretty sure is what WandaVision is. …Cool.

Deadpool officially joins the Mouse.

This should be entertaining:

Just two months after setting Bob’s Burgers alums The Molyneux Sisters as the writers for the highly-anticipated third installment in the Ryan Reynolds-fronted franchise, Kevin Feige has confirmed in an interview with Collider that Deadpool 3 will not only be set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but will keep the R-rated tone of the first two films.

That’s more or less everything. How the hell they’re going to cram Deadpool and the X-Men into the MCU is… not my bloody problem, is it? I’m sure they’ll work it all out in the end. Or perhaps they won’t even bother to explain. I mean, shoot: comic book movies.

Disney+ bringing TV time slots to streaming?

It feels that way, based on this bit from GeekTyrant about WANDAVISION: “WandaVision kicks off on Disney+ on January 15, 2021 and it will roll right into the final Friday before The Falcon and The Winter Soldier premieres on March 19.” Nine episodes, by the way – but it’s the part about how they’ll be dropping new episodes every Friday, and presumably they have shows lined up for after F&TWS’s last episode.

I guess This Is The Way now, huh? THE MANDALORIAN worked out (probably better than it would have if all the episodes dropped at once), so the Mouse is going to regularly drop new content on Fridays and not fuss overmuch if that turns out to be the big viewing day. After all, they’re not selling advertising on Disney+. Or at least not yet.

PS: It’s odd how there’s no THE MANDALORIAN DVD. I have no theories as to why, mind you. I just find it generally odd.

Tweet of the Day, The Mouse Maintains Impressive Informational Security edition.

Nobody heard about this – or any of the other stuff that happened in the finale of THE MANDALORIAN – until Disney was good and ready. Also: since Disney has mentioned it officially and everything, I am ABSOLUTELY there to watch a smirking Ming-Na Wen shoot people even worse than her on Temuera Morrison’s behalf. I didn’t even know I wanted that! Thanks, Jon, Dave, and Robert. Happy holidays to you, too.

WANDAVISION has a firm January release date.

WANDAVISION drops Jan 15th. About time – and I wonder if it has anything to do with the almost 74 million subscribers Disney+ apparently has now. If they’re looking to keep their content spread out, that would make sense, I guess?

Disney investor talks up all digital-release model.

Expect these calls to get ever louder:

One of Disney’s top investors wants the company to by-bass theatrical releases for some of its big tent-pole films like Black Widow and start releasing them on the Disney+ streaming service as they did with Mulan and the upcoming Pixar film Soul.

Dan Loeb, a hedge fund manager for Third Point with roughly a $1 billion stake in the company explains that releasing high-profile films like Black Widow to Disney+ would attract new subscribers while also retaining its current customers.

Disney retreats to streaming.

Dammit, I liked movie theaters. I went multiple times a year to movies and bought generously of the concession stands, too. I’d even shell out for promotional items, because I knew that every little bit helps and I enjoyed my local Regal Theater. But the writing’s on the wall:

Disney is restructuring its media and entertainment divisions, as streaming becomes the most important facet of the company’s media business.

On Monday, the company revealed that in order to further accelerate its direct-to-consumer strategy, it would be centralizing its media businesses into a single organization that will be responsible for content distribution, ad sales and Disney+.
