What can we conclude from the #sdmayor race?

As noted already, San Diego’s mayoral election was last night: and Republican Kevin Faulconer pretty much walked over Democratic David Alvarez, 55-45.  There are, I think, three things to take away from this:

  • Last-minute swooping in did nothing.  To paraphrase somebody or other, the days where we could safely discount Barack Obama’s ability to move the needle for a candidate are certainly coming to a middle. I suspect that the President was looking for an easy win, which is why the aforementioned swooping.  Alas…
  • Big Labor ain’t what it used to be. They kind of wanted this election.  I’m not exactly sure why, but I assume that the labor movement had a reason for pouring millions of dollars down a sinkhole. I think that they did both themselves and the President a disservice here, though: they both wasted a lot of money, and convinced President Obama to jump into a contest that he should have stayed away from. Because… Continue reading What can we conclude from the #sdmayor race?

I believe that it is time for the Beck Song in the #sdmayor election.

With 86% of the vote in, Republican Kevin Faulconer looks to be the winner over Democrat David Alvarez in the special election to replace disgraced Democrat Bob Filner. San Diego goes back to having generally Republican mayors, and the results tonight were never particularly close.

I understand that Big Labor poured something like $1.2 million into this race: congratulations, folks, it’s time for your theme song.

PS: If, for some reason, this reminds Big Labor of Wisconsin… well, it should.

PPS: For the record, AoSHQ called this election several hours ago.

I am reminded that the special mayor’s election in San Diego is tonight.

Well, today.

Anyway, should be interesting. I have absolutely no idea who is going to win this…

…but that’s a dang good sign for Faulconer (the Republican). Early/absentee voting usually favors the Democrats. Still, I have no idea who will win.

Heads up: San Diego mayoral election Tuesday.

Replacing the disgraced Democrat Bob Filner. The race is apparently close, with Republican Kevin Faulconer having a very decent shot:

…Faulconer has a far broader base of support and funding than Alvarez. He certainly has the support of the San Diego business community and related interests, but only about one-third of the contributions raised by committees supporting Faulconer has come from out-of-town sources.

Faulconer has also made a concerted effort to reach out beyond traditional Republican constituencies. The effort has paid off with endorsements that span the political spectrum: the San Diego Police Officers Association, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore and the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, the Latino American Political Association, pastors representing largely African-American churches, a group of bicycle enthusiasts, advocates for the homeless, including the revered Father Joe Carroll, a collection of Democrats, including the granddaughter of iconic farm labor leader Cesar Chavez, a group of women leaders, including Jacque Young, the wife of former Council President Tony Young, a Democrat, and former City Attorney Mike Aguirre, also a Democrat.

San Diego usually puts Republicans in charge: Bob Filner was a historical aberration. Continue reading Heads up: San Diego mayoral election Tuesday.

Did Bob Filner (D) agree to resign if the city of San Diego agreed to cover his legal costs?

I cannot wait to find out tomorrow.

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner has agreed to resign as part of a deal reached this week with city officials, NBC 7 News has learned.

Filner, spotted leaving City Hall with packing boxes Wednesday night, will formally vacate the office following a closed session of City Council Friday, according to several sources.

Filner’s attorney has a letter of resignation drafted for his signature upon approval of the tentative settlement by councilmembers.

I’m not the only one who’s wondering that, either.  In fact, I suspect that this may end up being the default assumption.  If so, it’s a perfect description of the current Democratic Establishment: first they Bad Touch you; then they cover it all up; and even if you catch them, they still manage to stick you with the bill. The war against the Democratic #waronwomen takes to the skies of San Diego!

“SURRENDER BOB.”

More pictures here. This event happened Friday: but I thought that people might enjoy a little amusement for their Sunday mornings.

Why has Bob Filner not been arrested? #waronwomen

Is there not enough evidence by now for a grand jury? Because there are several members of the National Women’s Veterans Association of America (NWVAA) that would no doubt like an answer to those two questions.

Three weeks ago, as women began to step forward to reveal instances of sexual harassment, the veterans at the NWVAA began to compare notes.

Tara Jones, the president of the group, said she’s spoken to seven to eight women who had varying encounters with Filner at the women’s veteran events, from groping to unwanted requests for dates.

“He went to dinners, asked women out to dinners, grabbed breasts, buttocks. The full gamut. Everything that is complete violation of what we stand for,” Jones said. “He’s a sexual predator. And he used this organization for his own personal agenda.”

Mayor Bob Filner (Democrat) to be keynote speaker at… sexual assault victim benefit.

I am somewhat pleased with myself that I never took any advantage of the license that a white Democratic male apparently has in the Democratic party:

10News has learned [San Diego] Mayor Bob Filner [Democrat] has agreed to be the keynote speaker at a benefit for sexual assault victims.

A women veterans group tells 10News the mayor’s camp has just confirmed the appearance. Filner was originally scheduled to attend as an award recipient.

The group has stripped him of the award. Instead, he is set to address the scandal now consuming City Hall.

Said scandal being in two parts: Continue reading Mayor Bob Filner (Democrat) to be keynote speaker at… sexual assault victim benefit.

San Diego to Arizona: “Look, just because we called you racist bigots…”

Ain’t a ‘misunderstanding,’ by the way.  Arizonans got the message loud and clear. Louder and clearer than desired, in fact.

UPDATE: Welcome, Instapundit readers.

“…doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t visit:”

San Diego tourism leaders and hoteliers fear they could lose a sizable chunk of business this summer from valued “Zonies” who are so angered by elected leaders’ recent censure of Arizona for its illegal-immigration law that they’re mounting an informal boycott of their own.

The San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau and several hotels report receiving e-mails and letters from Arizona visitors saying they intend to change their plans to travel here in light of local outcry over their home state’s anti-illegal-immigration stance.

Tourism officials are striking back. In an open letter, they urge Arizona residents to overlook local politics and come to San Diego just as they always have for its mild climate, beaches and attractions.

Read the whole thing, especially the parts where the Democratic legislators involved are stammering over the alarming revelation that their act of political … ah, ‘auto-eroticism’… actually had adverse consequences in Big-Person Land.  I encourage the San Diego hospitality industry to contemplate the implications of this; and to further contemplate that the solution to their problems with an insulted customer base lies with dealing with the insulters, not the insultees

Big Government: Hey, guess who dumped 20K documents in a dumpster?

Nine days after there was an announcement that their group was going to be investigated?  Yup, that’s right: ACORN.  San Diego office – just before California AG Jerry Brown came to visit.  Alas, if only somebody had had the foresight to wait for this sort of thing to happen, and retrieve the documents…

Oh.  Right.

SanDiegoACORNDocumentDumpScandal-100909-Photo41

They didn’t shred, they didn’t redact, and they threw out people’s sensitive and personal information – including things like copies of Social Security cards, W-4 forms, and driver’s licenses. I’m not a lawyer, but apparently that’s grounds for legal action right there; document disposal requirements are very, very strict.  Which is why the local ACORN branch is trying the novel ‘Oops, fall cleaning‘ excuse.

Which almost might be believable, except of course for the underage El Salvadoran illegal immigrant brothel thing.
