OH MAN OH MAN this is, like, really important I don’t know the answer.

OK, so in Star Trek IV they go back in time, right? – What?  No.  The movie’s old enough to vote.  Go watch it, if you haven’t seen it.  Anyway, they go back in time from 2286 to 1986, all right? They get the whales.  They come back.  Problem solved.  Only, here’s the thing.  In the reboot, the Romulans come back from the end of the 24th Century – I SAID, watch the damn movies already – and go to 2233, and change the timestream completely, OK?  Only,  only, here’s the thing; they changed the time stream before 2286 but after 1986.  There’s at least, three, four times before 2233 that the original Enterprise bridge crew is still alive, right, right?  So they’re still there, OK?

I… don’t know where I stand on this.

‘This’ being the problem that there are two franchises, and only one JJ Abrams.

See, I don’t know which side I identify with more, because it depends on circumstances.  I watched both Star Wars and Star Trek.  I read the ST books, not the SW ones.  I play the SW video games, not the ST ones.  I know the back-story to ST better than I do SW; I know how to roleplay a SW character better than I know how to roleplay a ST one.  I’m torn even when it comes to the franchises themselves: I love the ST reboot because it’s deliberately evocative of TOS, but SW desperately needs a reboot, if not a a finger-down-the-throat purge.

It’s a puzzler.

JJ Abrams seems to be a decent man…

…who likes to do decent things for people when he doesn’t have to.  You may remember that Abrams brought the first Star Trek movie and the stars of it over to Kuwait in advance of its commercial release, solely to entertain the troops; he seems to be carrying on the tradition of finding little grace notes to strike.

Diagnosed with terminal cancer, Daniel Craft, director of the New York Asian Film Festival, was allowed to see an early cut of the upcoming Star Trek film nearly five months ahead of its release date.

Anyway, I am of course moderately looking forward to this movOHMYGOD THAT’S SHERLOCK AS THE VILLAIN AND THAT ACTRESS ISN’T NURSE CHAPEL SHE’S CAROL MARCUS THIS IS GOING TO BE ABSOLUTELY INSANE I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN

Via @MellissaTweets.  I retain a certain fondness for William Shatner, which is largely tied up with my certain fondness for Star Trek: TOS.  Which is to say, I fully recognize that there were large aspects of the entire Star Trek thing that were hokey and silly, but I loved the show as a teenager and I ended up reading a lot of hard science fiction because of it.  So Happy Birthday, William Shatner.

This is still possibly his best performance EVER, though.
