The possibly-hopeful-maybe Cars 3 Trailer.

Come, I will conceal nothing from you: I would not be heartbroken to hear that all the people responsible for Pixar’s past rough patch had been unceremoniously fired from their jobs and were now in Japan doing knockoff animation.  Not least because of the historical irony involved. But this? This does not look half-bad.

I would not object to Cars 3 not sucking.  Neither would my kids, obviously.

Hot damn, they’re gonna make Mark Millar’s Starlight.

With… Sylvester Stallone as the lead?  Don’t care, this is still awesome. He’ll either be good enough, or they’ll get somebody else.

Starlight is a comic book from Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Wanted), which tells the story of an aged retired Superhero named  Duke McQueen who hears the distress calls of a distant planet and decides to put on the tights one last time. The screenplay for the film is being written by Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) and it’s being produced by Simon Kinsberg (X-Men franchise).

Starlight is one of those comic book series where I kept expecting Millar to start making fun of the entire premise.  Because that’s what typically happens: there’s a class of people out there who absolutely loathe 1950s pulp and and swashbuckling adventures and science fiction serials and all the attitudes found therein, and many of them have the ability to get stuff published.  But Millar apparently loves all that stuff, too, and he played it straight.  I enjoyed the heck out of it, and I will hopefully enjoy the movie just as much.  Assuming it gets made, of course. Well, I’ve been putting it off, but: time to park my The Secret World character.

I dunno when Secret World Legends is starting up – haven’t gotten a beta invitation yet, which is a little annoying* – so it’s time to get my The Secret World character all squared away and in full dress uniform and somewhere appropriate for the fall of night.  She’s no Commander Shepard or Grey Warden or Dragonborn, but… no, that’s not really fair.  I invested a lot of time in my Bee.  Weird to say that about video game characters, but it’s true all the same.

Time to go see Kirsten Geary in her office. She always was an old softy, really.

Live-action Teen Titans, Season 3 of Young Justice planned for 2018.

This is arguably good news and almost certainly good news, respectively:

Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment today announced that executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Geoff Johns, Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are teaming up for the all-new live-action drama series Titans, which will debut in 2018. Additionally, Warner Bros. Animation’s Young Justice: Outsiders, the highly anticipated third season of the popular Young Justice series, is also ramping up for its first mission next year. Both fan-driven series are in early stages of production and will air exclusively on a DC-branded direct-to-consumer digital service in 2018.

Via Nerdbastards.  I’ve just started watching Young Justice, actually; I like it.  I’m not sure that I’m going to like a live-action Teen Titans, though. Animation just seems simpler, somehow.

Exowomb research now at the baby lamb stage.

The future approaches, whether we like it or not. I’m not frantic about the idea of exowombs, but I can absolutely understand it if other people are. There are any number of ethical pitfalls just waiting for the unwary, here:

Inside what look like oversized ziplock bags strewn with tubes of blood and fluid, eight fetal lambs continued to develop — much like they would have inside their mothers. Over four weeks, their lungs and brains grew, they sprouted wool, opened their eyes, wriggled around, and learned to swallow, according to a new study that takes the first step toward an artificial womb. One day, this device could help to bring premature human babies to term outside the uterus — but right now, it has only been tested on sheep.

The leap to human clinical trials may be delayed for a while, though.  This is one of those topics that is, as they say, fraught. Lots of emotional energy involved, not to mention people on hair triggers. They may decide to just use this technology on animals for a while.  Which would certainly make the people running endangered species breeding programs happy, so there’s that.

The least glamorous aspect of the author’s life: re-filing stuff.

I’d known for some time that it was virtually impossible for me to find anything that was a work-in-progress, of course.  But I’ve been putting off cleaning up my internal files anyway, because laziness.  False laziness, of course: real laziness would have had me do it properly the first time, so that I’d never have to think about it ever again.

Anyway, I’ve been sorting through Google Docs for several hours, and as soon as I’m done eating the ham sandwich that my body eventually flat-out ordered me to make, I’ll be getting right back to it.  The good news?  I actually found stuff that I’ve been looking for! …And a story that I, um, forgotten that I had finished the first draft of. That’s just embarrassing.

PS: If you’ve been putting off your filing, stop putting it off.

Quote of the Day, There Is Much About Parenting/Grandparenting In Here edition.

This is from the latest 3 Minute Max, which attempts to explain why updating has been so erratic lately:

Max-the-father had assumed that since he and his wife would be taking time off from work for the new baby, he’d have just oodles of free time to work on the comic. Bob-who-is-now-a-grandfather, grizzled with the experience of age, tried not to laugh directly in his face. And as Bob expected, there was no free time and even less sleep and all Max’s drawing stuff was packed away to make room for baby stuff and nine million relatives dropping by.

However, possibilities are being discussed involving certain grandparents (Bob and wife) who can not only babysit but have plenty of space for Max to set up a drawing area for comic work. So this will be attempted. Max will try bringing over the new offspring, hand her off to doting grandparents, and settle himself down for comic work while Gramps introduces the baby (codename Megumin) to the Path of Explosions.

Grandparents are a precious, precious resource. I so absolutely understand now the appeal of one of those mother-in-law apartments that you see in some houses. Also: Bob writes the comic, Max draws it.  It’s nice to be able to share a hobby like that with your parents.
