Bloom County collection at Humble Bundle.

Fifteen bucks gets you all the old Bloom County collections, the Outland stuff, the Opus stuff, and the new Bloom County stuff.  I mean: you do know that Berkeley Breathed is regularly drawing Bloom County again, right?  I can’t believe that I wouldn’t have mentioned it.

PS: I’d like to be able to say that maybe the evidence suggests that Bill Watterson is maybe thinking about coming back, but that’d be wishful thinking. Or wistful thinking. Phrase works either way.

So I saw the words ‘Helen Mirren’ and ‘Winchester’ together in movie news…

…and I thought to myself, Man. If only this was going to be a horror movie about that lady who built that crazy Winchester Mansion. But what are the odds that Helen Mirren’s going to star in a movie like that?

And LO! The universe provides.

The Winchester movie follows the story of firearm heiress Sarah Winchester (Mirren), who was convinced that she was haunted by the souls killed at the hands of the Winchester repeating rifle. After the sudden deaths of her husband and child, she threw herself into the 24-hour a day, seven days a week construction of an enormous mansion designed to keep the evil spirits at bay. But when skeptical San Francisco psychiatrist Eric Price is dispatched to the estate to evaluate her state of mind, he discovers that her obsession may not be so insane after all. Winchester will take audiences inside the labyrinth like house that is believed to be one of the most haunted places in the world.

The Sigil & Sign Cthulhu Mythos RPG Kickstarter.

The hook is that the players play the cultists. It’s also got this card-based character sheet system going on that I’m not familiar with, but let’s face facts: I buy more games than I play anyway.  I feel that at least I’m helping to keep more money in circulation, and that should eventually benefit me, right?

Anyway, the Sigil & Sign Cthulhu Mythos RPG is being put together by MBG Games and Cubicle 7 – the latter folks being the ones who do the Laundry RPG, which I order directly from England because it’s faster that way – and has some names writing for it that you might recognize. Check it out.

Need to walk through some computer upgrade stuff.

Basically, here are the relevant specs:

  • 1 x AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz(4.2GHz Turbo) CPU and AMD 760G Chipset Motherboard Combo
  • 1 x AMD Radeon R9 280 3GB Video Card (Require Min. 600W Power Supply)
  • 1 x CYBERPOWERPC 600 Watt 80+ Power Supply
  • 1 x 8GB DDR3 1600MHZ (2 X 4GB)
  • 1 x Major Brand 1TB 7200 RPM SATA III 6.0
  • 1 x AMD CPU Cooler
  • 1 x 12X Blu-ray Player & DVD-Rewriter Combo Drive

My priorities for upgrades are as follows:

  1. Switch out the video card for, probably, a GTX 780 (cheaper on Newegg than Amazon).
  2. Get my RAM up to 16GB.
  3. Add or switch my hard drive to 2TB or above.

NASA fiddling around with 3-D printed ‘chain mail.’

‘Chain mail’ in quotes because, appearances to the contrary, the stuff isn’t designed for boarding actions. Or battlesuits.  It’s instead a multi-purpose fabric:

The space fabrics have four essential functions: reflectivity, passive heat management, foldability and tensile strength. One side of the fabric reflects light, while the other absorbs it, acting as a means of thermal control. It can fold in many different ways and adapt to shapes while still being able to sustain the force of pulling on it.

Pixar’s people have their own, highly macabre, theories as well.

Item Seed: The Apocalypse Trunk.

Apocalypse Trunk – Google Docs

The Apocalypse Trunk

The Apocalypse Trunk resembles an old-style steamer trunk, albeit one with wheels.  Trying to move it around quickly demonstrates why it has wheels: the trunk is heavy, weighing in at around 350 pounds.  It can technically be opened, but in that particular way that’s reserved for items that people are not really supposed to open unless they’re are specifically-trained technical personnel.  There are numerous data ports installed on the side of the Trunk, and a heavy-duty power cord attached to it, so it doesn’t need to be opened to be used anyway.

Anyone who does open it will discover that the inside is packed with the latest word in hard drives.  The total storage capacity of the Apocalypse Trunk is about 75 petabytes, which is insane.  That’s enough for Google’s abortive 25 million book library archive – which is convenient, because that’s what’s precisely on the drives.  Which means that this is already one of the problematical items: stolen merchandise that is priceless in both the positive and negative senses. That library is theoretically worth hundreds of millions if not billions, but there’s nobody out there who it could be fenced to.
