Oof: Solo opens so low*.

103 million for the weekend, which is pretty damned bad when compared to expectations and probably budget.  It’s usually a safe enough bet to count on Disney’s ability to make the sharp curve in time, but not this weekend; I was expecting $130 million.  Clearly, I was wrong. Good thing I don’t handicap movies for a living, huh?

Shame, though: Solo wasn’t bad, for what it was. And it may still generate legs and a sequel, because of [SPOILERS].  But there’s apparently a limit to how much Star Wars can be stuffed into a movie schedule.

Our long national nightmare is over: there will be a Boba Fett movie.

Rejoice: “James Mangold is writing and will direct a Star Wars standalone movie centered on Boba Fett, the feared bounty hunter and fan favorite character, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.”  Guess they ran the likely numbers for Solo this weekend* and realized that, hey, this was a doable project. Or Disney has a checklist, and it’s Reveal The Next Movies time. Probably the last movie of the trilogy, the Boba Fett flick, and then the Kenobi standalone.

I would not object to a neo-Western/samurai Ben Kenobi flick, honestly.  It would have a certain appeal.  And it’s likely to be able to sustain a couple of titles, too. Continue reading Our long national nightmare is over: there will be a Boba Fett movie.

BBC starting to film The War of the Worlds.

Set in Edwardian England, this new adaptation of H.G. Wells’ seminal tale – the first alien invasion story in literature – follows George (played by Rafe Spall) and his partner Amy (Eleanor Tomlinson) as they attempt to defy society and start a life together. Rupert Graves is Frederick, George’s elder brother, and Robert Carlyle plays Ogilvy, an astronomer and scientist. The War of the Worlds tells their story as they face the escalating terror of an alien invasion, fighting for their lives against an enemy beyond their comprehension.
