(Alleged) Occupy Wall Street activist arrested in ANOTHER (alleged) bomb plot.

Please note: “another.”

To the best of my knowledge, accused bombmaker Aaron Greene is not linked in any formal way to last year’s plot by Occupy Wall Street activists to bomb a Columbus, Ohio bridge.  Then again, it’s not entirely clear what Greene was (allegedly) planning to bomb: when the cops arrested him and his bourgeois moll Morgan Gliedman they had just gotten to the stage of putting an actual bomb-making shop together*.  A charming little substance called HMTD was found on-scene**; for those without access to Wikipedia, it’s the triggering explosive of choice for suicide and car bombers worldwide.  And, naturally, Greene and Gliedman are both children of privilege.  One would wonder if Mummy and Daddy hugged them enough… but then, most people who don’t get hugged enough still somehow manage to avoid making bombs in response, so perhaps the answer isn’t really all that interesting after all.

Not much else to note, except for this rather unfortunately surnamed lawyer’s quote from the Huffington Post:

“The whole situation’s sad,” said attorney Lisa Pelosi, who represented Greene. She declined further comment.

Journal News helpfully tells criminals which NY residences to avoid.

I understand that the idea here by the Journal News was to intimidate/harass New York handgun owners by publishing their names and addresses, but the reality is that everybody on that map listed as having a handgun permit is now at least slightly less likely to be burgled.  Seriously: if you robbed houses in Westchester and Rockland counties, wouldn’t you check this database first?  After all, while New York’s Castle Doctrine policies are weaker than in other states, it explicitly indicates that you can shoot a burglar:

A person in possession or control of, or licensed or privileged to   be in, a dwelling or an occupied building, who reasonably believes  that another  person is committing or attempting to commit a burglary of such dwelling or building, may use deadly  physical  force  upon  such  other person  when  he  or  she  reasonably  believes  such to be necessary to prevent or terminate the commission  or  attempted  commission  of  such burglary.

In other words: you know who should be ticked about this?  People in those counties without handgun permits.  Because burglars are gonna burgle.

Republicans retain control of New York State Senate!

Sort of.

How did I ever miss this? From the National Journal:

After weeks in which control of the New York state Senate was uncertain, the group of breakaway Democratic senators has struck a deal with Republicans to share control, the groups announced Tuesday.

The agreement means that the Independent Democratic Caucus will have formal recognition as a permanent third conference in the state Senate. Dean Skelos, the GOP Conference leader, and Sen. Jeffrey Klein, the IDC leader, will share “joint and equal authority.” The title temporary president will alternate between the two men every two weeks.

Mark Suben, Democratic district attorney for Cortland County, admits lying about being in porn.

This is a problem.

Mark Suben, the Cortland County district attorney, said today he acted in pornographic movies in the 1970s.

In a 3 p.m. news conference today, he admitted that he lied about his history to The Post-Standard and other news operations in the days before the Nov. 6 election. He was re-elected to a second term.

The New York Times, as usual, buries the lede on Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

It set out to write a painfully self-torturous article on how Hurricane Sandy reveals class divisions, yadda yadda – and in the process the author wrote this:

Moments later, a white woman leaned down to address his daughter. “Have you eaten in two days?” she asked.

Mr. Ossy surged with outrage. Power was out, yes, and nights were cold for sure, but Mr. Ossy, a taxi driver proud of the long days he works to earn money for his family, was insulted by the suggestion that his daughter was not well cared for.

The New York Times decided to title the article “Helping Hands Also Expose a New York Divide.”  I suggest that next time it instead try this headline:

IT’S BEEN THREE DAMNED WEEKS AND THE POWER’S STILL OUT.

But that’s just me.  The Hell, Bloomberg.

Unseasonable snowfall in Hurricane Sandy areas.

Not good news, considering that the area is still trying to recover from the earlier hurricane; they’re talking another round of evacuations and loss of power.  I’m keeping the folks up there in my thoughts and prayers, and I hope that you’ll do the same.  Also, the Salvation Army is still working in the area; donations may be made here.

What the National Guard flap tells us about Bloomberg (who btw endorsed Obama).

This is from yesterday, but it bears noting:

Mayor Bloomberg has snubbed Borough President Markowitz’s impassioned plea to bring the National Guard to Hurricane Sandy-scarred Brooklyn — arguing that approving the Beep’s request would be a waste of federal manpower and turn the borough into a police state.

“We don’t need it,” Mayor Bloomberg said on Wednesday during a press update on the city’s ongoing Hurricane Sandy cleanup. “The NYPD is the only people we want on the street with guns.”

Obama-supporter Mike Bloomberg continues to force the NYC Marathon to run.

This is a thing that is happening.

It should not be happening.

PS: If you run in this year’s NY Marathon then shame on you.

Mayor Bloomberg to hold marathon, despite pleas from Staten Island.

This is… foul. And more than a bit tawdry.

Desperately needed food, water and generators were being rushed Thursday to Sandy-ravaged Staten Island while local leaders blasted the city’s “idiotic” plan to stage the New York City Marathon in the midst of the crisis.

Staten Island Councilman James Oddo urged Mayor Bloomberg to reconsider, especially while rescue efforts are still underway on the hard-hit South Shore.

“The notion of diverting even one police officer, one first responder, one asset away from this carnage is beyond irrational,” the Republican lawmaker told The Daily News.

“The mayor said to me, ‘We’re not going to diminish what is happening on Staten Island.’ You know what happens on marathons – you put a cop on every corner. How are we going to have enough resources?”

The answer, of course: they won’t. Because Staten Islanders are not as important as NYC Marathoners, apparently.

And I am going to stop typing now.

American Action Network’s targeted advertising and the redistricting wars.

It’s interesting.  If you look at these two ads from American Action Network – one for California, and one for New York – solely from the perspective of a national observer, it’s a headscratcher as to why a conservative-leaning group is targeting six Democratic Members of Congress (Tim Bishop, Lois Capps, John Garamendi, Jerry McNerney, Bill Owens, & Louise Slaughter) in two Blue States; particularly since none of the individuals involved are freshmen.  And yet AAN did not merely do the ads; they’re going to be backing them with targeted online advertising.  And why are they doing this?

Because California and New York both had… unexpected… results in the redistricting wars.  Ones that actually ended up not hurting Republicans as much as expected. Continue reading American Action Network’s targeted advertising and the redistricting wars.
