Nearly two-thirds of small businesses that currently offer health insurance to their workers will pay more for coverage as a result of new rules in the health care law, as will millions of small-business employees and their family members, according to new estimates released by the Obama administration.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which has spearheaded the implementation of the law, has acknowledged that new rules requiring insurers to offer guaranteed coverage and renewal options to small employers will likely drive up the price of insurance for some companies. So will rules banning insurance companies from varying their rates based on factors like a company’s industry or the age of its employees.

Florida Democratic congressional candidate Alex Sink said immigration reform was important at a Tuesday debate because, without it, it would be difficult for employers to find people to clean hotel rooms and do landscaping.
“Immigration reform is important in our country,” she said. “We have a lot of employers over on the beaches that rely upon workers and especially in this high-growth environment, where are you going to get people to work to clean our hotel rooms or do our landscaping? We don’t need to put those employers in a position of hiring undocumented and illegal workers.”

Despite his administration’s quiet move overnight to ease the individual mandate for some Americans, President Obama said today the requirement will “absolutely” be enforced starting April 1, 2014, when everyone must have health insurance or pay a fine.
Speaking at an end-of-year news conference, the president insisted that there will be no delay of the mandate as some Republicans have repeatedly called for.

…it’s not clear that the IRS will deploy much in the way of resources to aggressively search for individuals who don’t get coverage this first year. Enforcement of the individual mandate likely will be a huge challenge for the agency, both because of the difficulties in figuring out who doesn’t have insurance and the political problems it would pose for the Obama administration.
“I’d be very surprised if there’s much in the way of enforcement. It just doesn’t seem plausible,” said Federal Policy Group Managing Director Ken Kies, a former top congressional aide. “The IRS is in a tough spot. They don’t have the resources to do this. This is a whole different responsibility for them they never had before.”

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s commerce secretary Maurice Jones improperly lobbied Congress as a member of the Obama administration, according to an internal federal investigation launched by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
…Oh, wait, it happened last year. Apparently the guy thought that it was OK to use his position as a HUD deputy secretary to lobby against upcoming legislation. Naturally, the Department of Justice decided not to prosecute – squashing internal investigations is what Eric Holder is there to do* – but one wonders why Terry McAuliffe didn’t vet his appointees bettHAHAHAAHAAHAAAAAHAAAA :snort: sorry, I couldn’t maintain a straight face for long enough.

Because it amuses me to put this one up. I’d explain, except that it’d be boring.
I’ve been saving up for the last few months to buy one – my children have taken over the iPad, and that is the way of it – and I’m almost there. Problem is, I’m not sure which is better: the HDX 8.9″ is lighter and has better resolution, but for the prices that I’m looking at I could get double the memory if I went with the regular HD 8.9″. Anybody who’s played with either have an opinion?
I know, I know: First World problems. Gimme a break: this is the item I hide from my family and use for my own entertainment needs. Pretty much every other digital device in the house has been colonized by my children: they’re even eying the Chromebook. While most people focus on the 63-seat Republican gain that brought the GOP control of the House, what often gets lost is the remarkable turnover in governorships and state legislatures.
…my readers were properly informed. And then there’s this chart, which shows that the only times in the last century or so that the President’s party gained state legislature seats in a midterm were in 1934 (first flush of the New Deal) and 2002 (first flush of the GWOT). Those are grim odds for the Other Side’s political partisans.
