The “I Dunno” live-action Aladdin trailer.

Trying to decide how I feel about this Aladdin trailer.

Most of the live-action Disney flicks I am, frankly, meh about.  My exceptions are Mulan and Aladdin; Mulan because you can make a very good live-action film out of it with only a little in the way of CGI shrine dragonage; and Aladdin because I will be absolutely fascinated to see who has the self-regard to put his feet in Robin Williams’ sandals.  I’m not saying it can’t be done; I’m just saying I can’t begin to think who can do it.

I guess we’ll see!

Marvel shows Scarlett Johansson the money: $15M for standalone film.

(Via @gabrielmalor.) Nice hunk of change, that: “Scarlett Johansson, who has appeared in six movies as Black Widow, is finally landing a $15 million payday for an upcoming stand-alone film centered on the Marvel superheroine, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.” This is Thor and Captain America-level cash; it also makes a good deal of sense, because I’m pretty sure that every person who reads this who also goes to movies in the theater will be planning to watch Black Widow acrobatically beat up a remarkable number of bad guys.

They’re also bringing back Ryan Coogler for Black Panther 2: “…Coogler’s camp shook off the peer pressure and took its time in making a deal, which occurred under the radar some time ago. Sources say the plan at this stage is for Coogler to write the script next year with an eye to start production in either late 2019 or early 2020.” To paraphrase somebody or other, the negotiations probably involved just how many dump trucks full of money Coogler would be getting.  ScarJo, Ryan, bubbelehs: your rule of thumb here should be all that the traffic will bear.  Make ’em make it rain.

Sooooo, there’s going to be a Dark And Gritty Fantasy Island remake?

Goodness gracious.

Dave Bautista is in negotiations to join the upcoming film adaptation of the classic TV series Fantasy Island. He will join Michael Peña, who is talking on the role of the iconic character Mr. Roarke.

The movie is described as being a “tonal mix of Westworld meets The Cabin in the Woods, centering on a group of contest winners who arrive at an island hotel to live out their dreams, only to find themselves trapped in nightmare scenarios.”

Venom brings in an $80/$205 million opening weekend.

Didn’t expect thatVenom is turning out to be one of those flicks that the critics hate and the movie-going public maybe doesn’t; I say ‘maybe’ because Solo had a decent opening weekend* and then proceeded to go belly-up. But if Venom has any legs, Sony is going to keep going with the Spider-Verse stuff.  At least, until Disney buys them, which probably will happen in 2025 or so**.
